As a bonus report to SWW subscribers, we occasionally apply our Stock Watchlist Weekly proprietary algorithm to a specific theme or category that traders and investors might want to consider when we find an interesting opportunity. As with the primary Sunday newsletter, these lists include stocks that have been screened through an array of fundamental and technical data points to find the top ones with market-beating short- and long-term potential. As always, the algorithm is limited to assessing substantial public companies: NYSE or NASDAQ listed; highly liquid; optionable; share price under $500.
💡 This Week’s Analysis: Consumer Defensive stocks, sometimes known as Consumer Staples, represent companies that produce or sell items considered essential for everyday use. These include food, beverages, household and personal products, and tobacco. Because these products are always in demand, regardless of economic conditions, the sector tends to be less sensitive to economic cycles compared to others.
From October to December, a notable uptick often occurs in the Consumer Defensive sector. To be more exact, over the last 10 years from October 5th to December 13th both the XLP (Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund) and the VDC (Vanguard Consumer Staples Fund) ETFs increased in price 100% of the time, with an average gain of about 5% for both during this period.
So this week we arranged the parameters of the Stock Watchlist Weekly proprietary algorithm to generate a list of stocks that appear to have a solid chance to ride this seasonal trend to higher prices this year.
As always, remember that this list should be considered merely a watchlist and starting-point for further research. Also, keep in mind that many aspects of the post-COVID economy have been unusual, which may alter traditional seasonal patterns.
Beyond that, the proprietary algorithm processed and ranked this list of Consumer Staples stocks as follows.
